Your skin is much more than a protective barrier

In fact, it is the body’s largest and perhaps most versatile organ (don’t come for me, liver lovers!). Your skin is responsible for performing at least seven essential functions. It protects us from environmental harm, helps to regulate our body temperature through sweat, goosebumps, and expanding/contracting blood vessels, synthesizes vitamin D from sun exposure, and detects sensations like touch, heat, and pain. Your skin also acts as a reservoir for storing water and fat, supports immune defense via a unique, slightly acidic immune system called the Acid Mantle, and plays a vital role in excretion by eliminating toxins through sweat (and breakouts!). This multi-talented organ connects our inner health to the outer world, making proper skin care essential for overall well-being.

A Window to Inner Health

Traditional Chinese medicine views the skin as a mirror of internal health, linking its appearance to organ function and energy flow. For instance, dull or inflamed skin may signal imbalances in the lungs or digestive system, rashes can indicate a stressed liver, and jawline acne can indicate hormonal imbalances. Practitioners often use Face Mapping and overall skin appearance as an assessment to direct them to certain organ systems and bodily functions that may not be performing optimally. This ancient perspective highlights the interconnectedness of the body, emphasizing the importance of paying attention to our skin when it’s “speaking” to us, and addressing the root cause.

The Skin’s Role in Detoxification

Acting as an eliminatory organ, the skin aids the body in expelling toxins through sweat. Sweating not only regulates temperature, but also supports the liver and kidneys in removing waste products. Poor skin health or clogged pores can hinder this process, leading to toxin buildup that may manifest as acne or rashes. From a Chinese Medicine perspective, these skin issues are commonly thought to stem from an overburdened liver, where the skin becomes a toxic-waste dumping ground. When you are plagued by chronic skin issues, it might be a good indicator to take a deeper look at other body systems. A practitioner of Chinese Medicine, a Naturopath, or even a Functional Medical Practitioner, are all more likely to work with you from a holistic approach rather than referring you to a dermatologist for antibiotics and steroids.*

Absorption and Endocrine Disruptors

Modern science confirms our skin’s permeability, allowing many chemical compounds to penetrate and enter the bloodstream. More and more, we are beginning to understand just how much potential the topical absorption of harmful chemicals can lead to health issues over time. Many conventional skincare products contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals and known carcinogens that can interfere with hormonal balance, leading to issues like fertility problems, thyroid dysfunction, and even some types of cancer. Choosing natural, non-toxic products helps protect our delicate endocrine system and reduces our toxic exposures, thus reducing our risk factors for some illnesses.

Nurturing the Skin for Holistic Wellness

Understanding the skin’s diverse roles can inspire better care for it. The skin’s acid mantle is a thin, protective film made up of sebum, sweat, and natural oils, maintaining a slightly acidic pH (around 4.5-5.5). This acidity creates a hostile environment for harmful bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, preventing them from colonizing the skin. The acid mantle also supports beneficial microorganisms that strengthen the skin's microbiome, enhancing its immune defense. When disrupted by harsh soaps, antibacterial products, over-exfoliation, or environmental factors, the skin becomes more vulnerable to infections and irritation, highlighting the importance of gentle, pH appropriate skincare that preserves this natural barrier.

*Please note, I am not opposed to western allopathic approaches utilizing steroid and antibiotic treatments where they are appropriate. These medications can be lifesaving for potentially deadly conditions like Staph, Necrotizing Fasciitis, and many others not related to the skin. Unfortunately, these treatments are not reserved for life saving purposes, and are increasingly overprescribed with detrimental side effects for both the patient, and MDRS (multi-drug resistant strain) Bacteria as a whole.

It is predicted that if over-prescription of antibiotics continues, we will reach a point where antibiotics are no longer an effective treatment, and people will die from what used to be considered minor ailments.

This epidemic is already well underway with our elderly populations, who are up to 33% more at risk for mortality from UTI induced sepsis. UTI’s make up at least 15.5% of hospitalizations in elderly patients, up to 40% of which are misdiagnosed due to symptoms presenting very differently than in younger populations. Lastly, between 80-90% of UTI’s are caused by E.coli bacteria, which is notoriously drug resistant and difficult to kill without extremely powerful antibiotics. With UTI recurrence as high as 2-3x per year in some elderly populations, extremely drug resistant bacteria as the culprit, and repeated administration of the same high-acting antibiotic each time, our elderly populations are fighting a losing battle as the efficacy of these treatments dwindles with each use.

As for topical steroid use, please google images of “topical steroid withdrawal” for an immediate Hell No as to why this is not a moral or safe intervention (especially for long term use.) You’ve been warned. TSW (topical steroid withdrawal) symptoms can last for years, and lead to debilitating scarring and excruciating pain throughout the withdrawal process. TSW can occur from as few as two weeks of daily use applying topical steroids, but more commonly occurs with at least 2 months of use.

Can you tell I am passionate about this topic? Let’s leave the antibiotics & steroids for severe and life-saving illness intervention, and treat our skin with holistic approaches that take our whole bodies into consideration (especially if you plan to grow old, you may need those antibiotics later in life!). By treating the skin as a key player in overall health—aligned with insights from holistic medicine and modern science—you can empower your body to function at its best. Your skin isn’t just a surface; it’s an active, vital organ deserving of attention and care.
